If you're planning a civil wedding you will need to contact your local City/County/Borough Council office to get officially registered. (Google 'Births,Deaths and Marriages' / Registry office in your local area)
You must give notice at least 28 clear days in advance of your ceremony date. You can give notice up to 12 months in advance of your ceremony date. This is called a notice of Marriage (timescales vary regionally, so talk to your local Registrar)
It takes about 10-15 minutes to get the legal licence and certificate as part of a 2:2 meeting with the registrar (i.e. You, the couple: 2 witnesses) costs vary from £57 in Cheshire to £80 across other parts of the UK.
This is the most cost-effective way of completing your legal obligations. (*prices correct 2023)
Once you have completed the legal paperwork, you are then free to have your unique, bespoke amazing ceremony, exactly the way you have always wanted, with no restrictions of time and place, and with all the people and animals you wish.
